Chapter 19
REN AND I WALKED TO the stables without seeing any of the other students, thankfully. It was cold out and anyone with any sense was hanging out somewhere warm inside. I wasn’t that keen on running into Angela on my own but I wasn’t sure a huge horse was much better. At least Angela had normal-sized teeth.
“I wish this was all over. I wish I could go back to my old life like none of it had happened.” I buried my hands in my hoodie pockets.
“Was your old life so great?”
“I wasn’t getting constantly attacked.” I sighed. “Well, not by monsters anyway.”
“You hid away, not letting anyone close to you, scampering into corners like a timid mouse. That didn’t seem like much of a life.”
How much had Ren been watching me back then? I thought I’d been totally off his radar. I walked faster to keep pace with him.
“And you were such a poor girl. Not even able to afford a pretty dress. Being poor isn’t noble and courageous. It’s just not having money.”
In all the drama of the past few days, I’d forgotten Ren surprised me with the dress of my dreams.
“Like you’d know, rich boy.” I kicked a pile of leaves. “Hey, why did you buy me that dress anyway?”
Ren shrugged. “You looked happy in that dress. Not your usual self in your chewed up, falling apart hoodie and your hair scraped back in a ponytail.”
“I’m happy in my hoodie and ponytail, you know. I don’t need to look pretty to please anyone else.”
But I ducked my head to hide my smile.
“Maybe, but it’s always better to have the choice. Sometimes you might want to look pretty just to please yourself.”
“Thanks,” I mumbled. The words were hard to say. “Thanks for the dress, I mean.”
I wanted to say thanks for noticing me, thanks for realizing there was more to me than just a poor girl scampering around in the shadows. But that seemed too much. Ren would probably laugh.
“Anyway,” he said. “We haven’t encountered any dangers we haven’t been able to defeat.”
I didn’t want to mention just how soul-destroying it’d been to see one of my best friends lose her shit or to not know what was real and what wasn’t. Ren didn’t seem as rattled by that as I was.
Also, it worried me that if Lucas found out everything that’d been going on, he’d blame me for what happened to Britney.
“I guess the only way out of this is to keep fighting but I’d really like some time to study and that kind of thing.”
“Eat parfaits, you mean.” Ren broke into a huge smile.
He wasn’t wrong. In all this trouble, I’d forgotten my intention of going back to town and having another one of those super expensive and magically delicious parfaits.
“Eat parfaits, for sure.”
“If we get through this alive, I’ll buy you one.”
Part of me froze. That sounded almost like a date. Or did it? Maybe he just meant it in a friendly way. Stay friends, my brain said.
